GSK supports updated PHRMA code on interactions with heatlhcare professionals

GlaxoSmithKline (NYSE: GSK) today announced its support and intent to comply with the updated Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers Association (PhRMA) Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals (PhRMA Code).  The updated PhRMA Code complements GSK’s existing compliance program to ensure that our commercial activities are responsible and patient-focused.  This program includes policies governing sales and marketing activities, regular training for new and existing employees and rigorous compliance monitoring and auditing processes.

“Improving patient health and maintaining ethical standards in every interaction with healthcare professionals are at the heart of what we do each and every day,” said Chris Viehbacher, President, US of Pharmaceuticals for GlaxoSmithKline.  “GlaxoSmithKline maintains high standards for the information communicated about our medicines, and complies with both the original PhRMA Code and our own stringent policies regarding interactions with physicians.  Today, we are proud to join with others in the pharmaceutical industry in supporting the updated PhRMA Code.”

GSK was a founding member of the original PhRMA code governing sales and marketing practices, developed in 2002. The company’s own commercial practices policies, which pre-date the 2002 PhRMA Code, are also monitored and enforced.  GSK will begin an immediate review and revision of its existing policies and procedures in order to ensure compliance with the updated PhRMA Code prior to it taking effect in January 2009.
